What it costs
In player-vs-player poker the room earns from rake, not from a house edge.
Rake is charged on every raked pot; to win over time you need to beat the other players by more than the rake.
At 5% rake with a $3 cap, a $40 pot pays $2 in rake. Example terms; each room sets its own.
Rakeback deals return a share of the rake you paid, as stated by the room.
