Crypto coin flip: odds, chained flips and how to verify results

Crypto coin flip is a 50/50 call on heads or tails. At a 1% edge a correct call pays 1.98x. Many versions let you chain flips and let the payout ride, which multiplies the payout and the edge with every flip.

Below: the payout and cost for each chain length, a calculator and a provably fair example you can recompute.

Short answer

Is crypto coin flip a fair 50/50?

The chance is 50/50 and a win pays 1.98x at a 1% edge, slightly under the 2x a fair coin would pay. Chain flips and the edge is taken on each one: five flips in a row return about 95% on average, ten about 90%.

One flip RTP 99%

Pays 1.98x on a correct call.

Five flips RTP ≈ 95%

Pays about 30x; you must call all five right.

Ten flips RTP ≈ 90%

Pays over 900x and wins about once in 1,000 tries.

Cashing out after each flip keeps the cost at 1% per flip; letting it ride compounds it.

Crypto coin flip in four lines

  1. 1.98x

What a correct call pays at a 1% edge.

  2. 0.99^n

The RTP of n chained flips; each flip takes the edge again.

  3. 1 in 1,024

The chance of calling ten flips in a row.

  4. 50%

The chance on every flip, whatever came before.

Rules

How a coin flip round works

One round

  1. Call it Pick heads or tails.
  2. Bet Each flip uses the next nonce on your seed pair.
  3. Flip A correct call pays 1.98x at a 1% edge; a wrong call loses the stake.
  4. Ride or cash out Where the game allows a chain, keep the win riding for a bigger payout or take it.

Streak games pay more for each flip you add, and each flip costs the edge again.

House edge and RTP

Payout and cost for each chain length

The edge is taken on every flip, so the RTP falls as the chain grows.

Each flip you chain costs the edge again; long chains are the most expensive way to play.

10926.09x1 in 1,02490.44%$9.56 the cost is about ten times a single flip.

Computed at a 1.00% house edge, a common setting; each casino states its own edge in the game rules.

Calculator

Work out a coin flip session before you play

Multiplier = (100 − edge) ÷ win chance (100 − 1) ÷ 50.00 = 1.98x

Expected loss = bets × stake × edge 100 × $1.00 × 1% = $1.00

No win in 100 bets = (1 − p)^100: 0.0%

What it means

Every flip you add to a chain multiplies the payout and takes the edge again. Cashing out after each flip is the cheapest way to play.

Provably fair Example data

How provably fair coin flip works, with a worked example

A common scheme used by seed-based coin flip games. Each casino documents its own variant on its fairness page.

  1. The casino commits Before your first bet it shows the SHA-256 hash of a secret server seed. Server seed hash (shown before play) 0cf2aa805b23e2c118c7b2c666bcb6d1a9aaab37fcda5f731c07cd3f4fcb9d3b
  2. You add your seed You set a client seed; each bet adds a nonce counting from 0. Client seed · nonce ccr-demo-coinflip · 0
  3. The result is derived HMAC-SHA256 with the server seed as key and client:nonce:0 as message. HMAC-SHA256 output 0f58557c 4b535c72b7edcf51216edf41b6bf7794ef4d69fb901515ea98b2bb94
  4. Bytes become a result The first four bytes make a float; in the common scheme below 0.5 is heads, otherwise tails. First four bytes → float → result 15, 88, 85, 124 → 0.0599416187 → heads
  5. You check After you rotate seeds the casino reveals the server seed; its SHA-256 must match step 1. Revealed server seed ea5b98b55f1c3a0f457b4539c5a64d8b0950a4cf0e9dfb2152d7ef7dab790246
What it proves

The casino fixed the server seed before you chose your client seed, so it could not pick results after seeing your bets.

What it does not prove

That the casino will pay a withdrawal, that the edge is low, or that third-party slots are fair.

Patterns and exceptions

What the coin flip maths shows

Chains

Chaining multiplies the edge

What it means: if you want a large payout, compare the cost of a chain with a single bet at the same multiplier in dice or limbo, which takes the edge once.

Exception: a game that applies the edge once to the whole chain would cost less; check the payout per step in the game.

Cost = 1 − 0.99^flips at a 1% edge per flip. Computed, not measured.

Method

How we rate casinos for coin flip

What we read before a casino appears in the list above.

  1. Edge and payout table

We read the house edge or RTP the casino states for its coin flip game and whether the payout table is published.

  2. Fairness page

We check that the casino documents its provably fair scheme and lets you set your own client seed and rotate the server seed.

  3. Licence and terms

We note the licence the casino states and read the bonus terms for game weighting and maximum bets.

  4. Coins and withdrawals

We list the coins the casino accepts and the identity checks it states for withdrawals.

  5. Limits

We check for deposit limits, loss limits and self-exclusion you can set yourself.

The edge comes from the casino's settings

Crypto originals are built in-house, so each casino chooses its own edge and payout table. We read them from the game's info panel instead of marketing copy.

Glossary

Coin flip terms

Chain
Several flips in a row with the payout riding on each next call. So what: the edge is charged on every flip.
Cash out
Taking the payout instead of letting it ride. So what: it stops the edge compounding.
House edge
The share of each bet the casino keeps on average. So what: at 1%, a win pays 1.98x instead of 2x.

Crypto coin flip FAQ

What does a crypto coin flip pay?

At a 1% edge a correct call pays 1.98x your stake. Casinos with a higher edge pay less; the payout is shown before you bet.

Is heads or tails more likely?

Neither. Each flip is 50/50 and does not depend on earlier flips.

Should I chain flips?

Only if you accept a higher cost. Each extra flip takes the edge again, so ten chained flips return about 90% on average against 99% for single flips.
