Crypto HiLo: odds per card and how to verify each draw

In HiLo you see a card and guess whether the next one is higher or lower. The payout for each guess follows from the chance: a guess that is likely pays little, a long shot pays a lot, and you can cash out between cards.

Below: the chance and payout for every rank at a 1% edge, and how each draw can be recomputed from the seeds.

Short answer

What are the odds in crypto HiLo?

It depends on the card shown. With ace low and each card drawn from a full deck, a 2 is followed by a higher card 11 times in 13; a 7 is followed by a higher card 6 times in 13. The payout is set so every guess returns the same 99% at a 1% edge.

Card shown: 2 84.6% higher

Pays about 1.17x.

Card shown: 7 46.2% higher

Pays about 2.15x.

Card shown: Q 7.7% higher

Pays about 12.9x.

Some games pay higher or same instead of strictly higher. That changes the chances; read the game rules.

Crypto HiLo in four lines

  1. 13

Ranks in the deck; each has a 1 in 13 chance as the next card when cards come from a full deck.

  2. 0.99 ÷ chance

The payout for a guess at a 1% edge.

  3. Same RTP

Safe guesses and long shots cost the same on average.

  4. No memory

When each card is drawn from a full deck, earlier cards tell you nothing about the next.

How a HiLo round works

One round

  1. See the card The game shows a starting card; many games let you skip it.
  2. Guess Higher or lower; the payout for each side is shown before you choose.
  3. Draw The next card comes from your seed pair and nonce.
  4. Continue or cash out A right guess multiplies your payout; a wrong guess loses the stake.

Check how the game treats a card of the same rank and whether aces are low or high.

Odds per card

Chance and payout for every card shown

Ace low, each card from a full deck, strictly higher or lower, at a 1% edge.

The payout tracks the chance; no rank is a better bet than another at the same edge.

Provably fair Example data

How provably fair HiLo works, with a worked example

A common scheme used by seed-based HiLo. Each casino documents how floats become cards on its fairness page.

  1. The casino commits Before your first bet it shows the SHA-256 hash of a secret server seed. Server seed hash (shown before play) 2e28fc7f508d1c859270c8c339d872eacea6d045e1d547bee945181effbfa1f0
  2. You add your seed You set a client seed; each bet adds a nonce counting from 0. Client seed · nonce ccr-demo-hilo · 0
  3. The result is derived HMAC-SHA256 with the server seed as key and client:nonce:0 as message. HMAC-SHA256 output 38c0c40f 1f9e9819b4a2983d1e12f055174eb48238221b62c3309a0ef4e72ae1
  4. Bytes become a result Each float picks one card from a full 52-card deck. The table shows the first float. First four bytes → float → result 56, 192, 196, 15 → 0.2216913735 → 0.2216913735
  5. You check After you rotate seeds the casino reveals the server seed; its SHA-256 must match step 1. Revealed server seed 18cbf060bb3d2967db8e00e876ff4af8c42b998e226a43dc636450d140f2aea9
What it proves

The casino fixed the server seed before you chose your client seed, so it could not pick results after seeing your bets.

What it does not prove

That the casino will pay a withdrawal, that the edge is low, or that third-party slots are fair.

Computed from the demo seeds shown. Casinos differ in message format and in how floats become results; follow the casino's own fairness page.

Patterns and exceptions

What the HiLo maths shows

Ranks

Middle cards are the closest to a coin toss

What it means: choose by the swings you want: guesses near the ends win often and pay little, middle cards pay about 2x.

Exception: a same-rank card loses both strictly higher and strictly lower guesses, which is part of the cost in games without a same option.

Chance = ranks above or below ÷ 13, ace low, card drawn from a full deck. Computed, not measured.

Method

How we rate casinos for HiLo

What we read before a casino appears in the list above.

  1. Edge and payout table

We read the house edge or RTP the casino states for its HiLo game and whether the payout table is published.

  2. Fairness page

We check that the casino documents its provably fair scheme and lets you set your own client seed and rotate the server seed.

  3. Licence and terms

We note the licence the casino states and read the bonus terms for game weighting and maximum bets.

  4. Coins and withdrawals

We list the coins the casino accepts and the identity checks it states for withdrawals.

  5. Limits

We check for deposit limits, loss limits and self-exclusion you can set yourself.

The edge comes from the casino's settings

Crypto originals are built in-house, so each casino chooses its own edge and payout table. We read them from the game's info panel instead of marketing copy.

Commercial relationship

Glossary

HiLo terms

Skip
Replacing the shown card without betting, where the game allows it. So what: it lets you wait for an end card, at no change in edge.
Full deck draw
Each card is drawn from all 52 cards, so repeats are possible. So what: counting cards does not help.
Cash out
Taking the current payout instead of guessing again. So what: it stops the round; it does not change the edge.

Crypto HiLo FAQ

Does counting cards work in crypto HiLo?

Not when each card is drawn from a full deck, which is how many seed-based HiLo games work. Every draw has the same chances. Check the game rules.

What happens if the next card has the same rank?

It depends on the game. Some pay higher or same and lower or same, others treat a tie as a loss or offer a separate same bet. The payouts shown before you guess include it.

Which card is the best to bet on?

None at a fixed edge. A 2 or a king gives a near-certain win with a small payout; a 7 gives about a coin toss at about 2x.
